PAINTER & STORYTELLER

I honor the Giver by using the gift.

Paintings made by hand, for hearts like yours

I started Light & Creation as a space to honor the beauty and resilience of Black women. To hold our stories in color, texture, and light.

My work begins with a simple belief: we were never an afterthought. Every detail, every shade and gesture…carries attention.

With each painting, I hope to remind Black women of what’s already true: that our presence matters, that our stories endure, and that our becoming is beautiful.

Light & Creation Studio is a space where art and spirit meet, where color becomes prayer and light becomes language. Each piece, from the large portraits to the quiet studies, holds memory and meaning, quiet testaments of resilience, restoration, and grace.

Mika Orr

Creative Visionary & Storyteller

Mika Orr is a painter and storyteller from Oakland, California, whose work explores the intersection of womanhood, memory, and spirit.

Her practice began in childhood illustration, where she learned to see shading as both light and emotion. Though she pursued more traditional paths for a time, Mika eventually returned to painting, drawn to explore the quiet power of color, texture, and narrative.

Through her studio, Light & Creation, she creates visual meditations that honor the resilience of Black women and the sacred process of becoming. Using layers of paint, metallic leaf, and botanical forms, Mika reimagines Black women as both muse and monument, symbols of tenderness, strength, and divine beauty. Each portrait becomes a site of reverence, where history and emotion converge in quiet testimony.

After walking through a season of stillness marked by loss and rediscovery, Mika’s work now reflects a deeper tenderness. She paints from the space where creation and restoration meet, capturing what it means to be both fragile and luminous.

Each brushstroke is an act of remembrance.

Each painting, a return to light.

A Note from the Studio

Light & Creation was born from a desire to hold space for Black women, to see our stories reflected in color, form, and light. This work is a practice of remembrance, a return to beauty that has always been ours.

May each piece remind you that your presence is purposeful, your story precious, and your becoming still unfolding.
